Chronicles of Hades

  1. Hey AshLynn!

When I saw you were writing about Hades, I had to click on your storybook. Hades is one of my favorite underestimated Greek myths, and I was not disappointed. First off, I think the art you chose is beautiful. I like how you stuck for the most part with traditional depictions of him instead of more modern depictions. Secondly, I love how you decided to tell the introduction in first person. It gave Hades a hilarious voice, and I'm not going to lie, I was imagining the Disney version until he pointed out he didn't have flaming hair.

I also really like how you designed your website. I don't have any particular comments to make on what you have. I'm curious to see how you make it interactive like you mentioned in the introduction. Will it still be in first person? Or will you change it up? I can't wait to see what you do!

  2. Hi AshLynn!

I really liked your introduction! I'm excited to see where your storybook project will go. I've always been a fan of the "Choose your own adventure" sort of stories and I'm glad that you're doing one! I think that you are using Twine to do this, and I have to say that I definitely had a lot of fun playing with Twine for one of the story labs. I really liked how you were able to explain the interactive part of your storytelling using the preferences of the main character himself. That Hades would be a big believer in choosing your own fate makes a lot of sense! Additionally, you had some really good hints and pokes at other myths scattered throughout the introduction that I thoroughly enjoyed. The only issue that I found were couple minor grammatical mistakes. Really, they're just a missing comma here or there. They should be quite easy to remedy with a quick proofread.

Great work! I can't wait to read more!

  3. Hi AshLynn
First, great job on your story book! I love classic mythology and the characters, as soon as I saw that yours was about hades and the underworld, I couldn’t resist to check it out! It was such a creatively awesome idea that you made your storybook an interactive one for the readers and tied that with fate being your own hands. You did a great job with explain that into the story as well. I enjoyed the amount of personality you gave Hades; it brings such a connection to the character. I cannot wait to see the pre-conceptions that turn out to be untrue or true, like the Disney flaming hair one! I feel like that’s who I always picture when I think of Hades. I am also excited to see Persephone’s story and perspective of her husband, her kidnapping, and life in the underworld. Keep up the good work!

  4. Hi AshLynn,

Thanks again for stopping by my blog; I liked your stories so much, I thought I would check out your Storybook project. When I saw it was about Hades, I knew I'd made the right choice - Hercules is one of my favorite Disney movies, and partly because of Hades' character (so sassy). I love that you made this interactive, giving us readers a sense of control over our fate, and providing for multiple endings. I love the callback to the Disney version of Hades, it gave a real sense of your Hades' personality. I also like the implication here that Persephone isn't just a damsel in distress, that she might actually enjoy her time in Hades. I agree with Rhys that there were a couple of grammatical errors, but they were minor and didn't detract at all from the personality Hades brought or the sense of wickedness of the whole story. I'm excited to read more, and get a new perspective on some of these stories, like Hades' birth and his marriage to Persephone. Great job, can't wait to read more!

  5. Hey AshLynn,

Awesome job already having the names of all your stories along with a banner picture. To start off, I think you made a great choice by giving your readers some background information about the characters in your stories. This was a good call because your readers aren't going into your storybook with no previous knowledge of the topic.

Your Introduction was a total catch. You did a great job of drawing the reader in and getting their attention from the start. It was broken into small paragraphs which also made it a nice and easy read.

I can tell that you have already put lots of work into this storybook. I love that in your origin you give your reader the choice of whether they want to read the story from Zeus's point of view or from Hades's point of view. I chose to read the story from Hades's point of view and then continue the story hearing from the daughters. I really enjoyed how interactive you are making this storybook because it keeps the reader interested. It is also nice that the story fits according to whichever path they may choose.

Great job, I am excited to follow this storybook as the class progresses.

  6. Hey AshLynn,

After reading the Introduction and Origin stories, I really like what you're doing with your project so far! You've really given Hades a dry sense of humor that makes him a fun storyteller to listen to. I also enjoyed the different perspectives that you offered throughout the Origin story. I wonder what the stories may be like if the perspectives of the multiple storytellers were all radically different?

The Origin story was pretty clear-cut, and the storytellers, while having all different perspectives, still pretty much reached almost identical conclusions. While this made sense with a more concrete story, stories like that of Persephone and Hades' marriage are sure to be much more divisive (especially between Hades and Demeter), and I'm eager to see how different storytellers may change the story according to their own biases and perspectives.

Overall, great start on this, and I'm definitely eager to read more and see how these classical stories evolve!

  7. Hey Ashlynn,
I was excited to come back and read the rest of your story! Your origin story for Hades was great! I liked how you gave the option for the reader to see it in Hades or Zues’s perspective. The interactive option is so fun and makes the reading go by so fast! I chose to read it in Hades perspective but I might just go back and read Zeus’s. His telling of the story was great too I like how he is so sarcastic and witty. You can really tell that you took time to think and personify what how hades would feel and how he would tell his side of the story. I honestly don’t have feedback, it’s a very well put together story. I am excited to be able to read Persephone’s perspective and what it’s like to be the wife of the king of the underworld.

  8. AshLynn, I love your storybook so far! I may be a little biased because I am obsessed with Greek mythology, but still, it is great. I think having the stories in a choose-your-own-adventure style is perfect since most people already have a general knowledge of Greek myths and this gives it a modern twist. I really enjoyed the origin story, however, I think it is a little messy as of now. Perhaps it is that there are way too many perspectives, or that each of them is not given enough context. I could follow along because I'm a Greek mythology geek, but for someone with less background on the topic, it may get a little confusing. I would recommend having a friend that know nothing about Greeks myths to go through each of the characters and give you some feedback on whether they could follow along or not. It may be that they perfectly can, but just in case I would recommend you try. In any case, this is still an amazing start to your project, I love the sarcastic voice you gave Hades, it completely suits his character. I can't wait to read the rest!

  9. Hi AshLynn! I love the image that you chose for your homepage! I also appreciate the addition of a little bit of background information. I love stories about Hades and Greek mythology in general, so this was very exciting for me. I love that the Intro is told in first person. It gives us a great idea of the Hades that you’re giving us. His own level of self-awareness is very amusing. The Origin was so creative! I never would have thought to tell it in a choose your own adventure type style, but it was excellent. It adds a nice layer of interactivity that is so fun! I can tell that you had a lot of fun in this. It was a joy to read. I wish I had any suggestions but keep doing what you’re doing! I’m definitely excited to see what other stories you end up telling!

  10. Hey, Ashlynn! Just got here from reading your Origin story (from the POV of Hades, because, who else would I ever choose?). First, I just need to say that when Poseidon shouted "Did Father just EAT me?" I laughed out loud and the people around me in this Starbucks probably think I'm a maniac. Just wanted to put that out there. I love that the siblings, squished together inside their father's stomach, are bickering. It's just like any time my parents crammed my sisters and I into a small space together. I also like the interactive format of your stories; it really gives us a chance to hear different sides of the stories and choose our favorite perspectives. I think that was a genius idea, honestly. Hades is really salty about being put in charge of the underworld, and I think that honestly, if he's real, that's probably accurate. So far I don't really have any suggestions, but to just keep going with this! I'm excited to read more!

  11. Hey AshLynn!
I have been really enjoying these interactive storybooks, I think that they are my favorite so far! I really enjoyed how you did it from the two perspectives. The introduction was super helpful to me because I don't know much about Hades. So the background information giving information as to who was what was incredibly helpful. You did a great job at showing how different their personalities are throughout the origin section. I read from both Hades and Zeus's point of view and I am glad that I did. It is funny to me that Zeus is like oh yeah we are all happy with our placements, meanwhile Hades seems pretty bitter. Your introduction also does a good job at setting up the story. Right now I don't have any feedback other than this, I am super excited to read more!

  12. Hey, AshLynn!
Wow! What a super cool concept! Holy cow, I am amazed at your attention to detail and amazing ideas. I thought it was really cool to do the stories from various perspectives. I think that doing your storybook this way really intrigues me. I enjoy hearing the alternative perspective that you had in your stories. I feel like it really brings out their personalities, almost makes people feel empathy? In a weird way. I thought it was super funny honestly and this is one of those storybooks that I will certainly have bookmarked for future viewing. I am super excited to see where this is going to go. I have to wonder, where did your idea for this idea come from? Where is it going to go? I do not have any critiques, your writing is just fantastic. Overall, you did an outstanding job with your story telling, and I have no criticisms.

  13. Hi AshLynn! I liked the first part of your storybook so much that I came back this week to read some more, and I was not disappointed. I read Persephone's story, and it was so nice to be able to read this story from her perspective. You definitely gave her a more playful, almost girlish tone than I think people usually do when telling her story, and I really liked that. I also liked how Persephone was teasing Hades, and how to her, he came off as kind of a dorky guy. Again, it shows a traditional character in a different, unexpected light. You humanized both of them while managing to do the same thing as the original myth, which was meant to explain the changing of the seasons. This isn't a criticism, but I do wonder how Persephone knew that if she ate anything in the Underworld, she would be obliged to come back to it. I wonder if it's something all gods and demigods know, or if her mother taught her, or something else. Great job!

  14. Hello AshLynn,

I would like to start off by saying that you did a great job with your story. I like how much attention you gave to the details to the ideas throughout the story. I really enjoyed the two different perspectives that you put into your story. I like what you did with your introductions which helped me understand more of the story. Getting the background story of a character or the story in general allows the reader to better understand the story and the reader is not wondering why something is going on. I like how you gave the character a playful tone instead of a serious tone which in my opinion would have not made the story as interesting. The story is very well put together. Overall I think you did a great job with this story and I can not wait to read more of your stories.

  15. Hi AshLynn! Your storybook has improved so much since the last time I read it. I remember that my original feedback as about your first story being confusing and to take time to go through it once more. Well, I don't know if yuo did change anything from the story, but it does feel more organized and easier to understand now. The other two stories are great, I really enjoyed them. I think my favorite is the last one, The Judges. I think tat the fact that you can kind of "change" the story and then be sent off from the underworld or become a judge, it is genius. I think I would have liked to see something like that in Persephone's story and even in the first one! For example, have an option to take the fruit from Hades or not, have a choice of how many seed she eats, and depending on the choices there would be a world without winter or a shorter one, something like that. In any case, your stories are still great and I do really enjoye how creative your storybook is, this was just a random thought. Week 10 is supposed to be focused on design, but I have no critiques there, I think the design of your website is simple but sweet. Overall, great job so far!

  16. Hi AshLynn! I've loved your storybook so much that I came back a third time. This time, I read your chapter "The Judges of the Dead." Such a cool idea to have us, the readers, take part in the judgement process. It's a lot of responsibility assigning people to their roles in the afterlife, but what a unique concept! I found some of the cases really tough to judge, and I think that was the point. It's hard to define people as just good or bad, or even good, bad, or unremarkable, as the Greek model of the afterlife does. I would have loved to get some background on the judges, just so I could have an idea of how they came to those positions, but I don't think that's a major issue, more just something I'm personally curious about. I think the overall design of your site is great, and I don't really have any suggestions for changing it. This whole concept is so unique and I'm really enjoying reading it. Keep up the great work!

  17. Hi AshLynn,
I am actually in the Indian Epics class but really wanted to read your story because I love Greek mythology and Hades is an interesting god. My favorite is him and Persephone together and the choose your own adventure aspect of your storybook is a lot of fun. The way that you have your storybook set up is easy to follow and the story sections that you created for following the story are perfectly organized. I think that the amount of story that you picked for each selection is just right and the paragraph segments are very well done. I really loved going through the stories and on a couple clicked start over so I could see the other options because it was so interesting. Your authors notes are very detailed and in them the paragraphs are separated efficiently as well. This storybook is a lot of fun and the graphics and images you used suit it well. Thank you for such a great read!
